Open Position(s) PhD/Post-doc in SP4 - Lighting Simulation for Architectural Design

The Rendering and Modeling group at TU Wien is looking for candidates interested in its interdisciplinary project "Advanced Computational Design", on the topic of "Lighting Simulation For Architectural Design".

This interdisciplinary Special Research Programme aims to develop advanced computational design tools for the early design phase in Architecture, Engineering and Construction in eight scientific subprojects spanning computer science (computer graphics), architecture, civil engineering and mathematics.

We are looking for candidates interested in computer graphics and light simulation, in particular (differentiable) physics-based rendering, numerical optimization, or machine learning for lighting design applications.

The goal of this project is to improve the architectural lighting design workflow by automating routine tasks while supporting lighting designers in non-routine tasks leading to an improved computational design workflow. In the initial phase of the project, we have focused on automated design optimization (see for example this paper).

We now envision extending this approach to interactive design, where the user retains manual control over important aspects of a design, while the system provides feedback and adjusts other aspects automatically, or suggestive editing, where the system suggests locally optimal solutions for a user-manipulated object. Furthermore, we are also interested in machine-learning methods, such as style transfer, that could speed up lighting design based on example data.

Work environment

The Rendering and Modeling Group at the Institute of Visual Computing & Human-Centered Technology carries out basic and applied research in photorealistic rendering, real-time rendering and geometric modeling. The candidates will be supervised by Prof. Michael Wimmer as well as other members of the SFB. Currently, there are about thirty people including professors, PhDs and graduate students working at our institute. We provide are very stimulating and highly enjoyable working environment in a competitive, internationally oriented research group, as well as an interdisciplinary context in the scope of the SFB.

Technische Universität Wien, generally referred to as TU Wien, is located in the heart of Europe, a place where one can experience cultural diversity and international life. Research, teaching and learning have been conducted here in the service of progress for 200 years. TU Wien is amongst Europe’s most successful universities of technology and, with over 30,000 students and a staff of about 5,000, is Austria’s largest scientific and engineering research and education institution.
Successful candidates will receive an employment contract from TU Wien remunerated according to the collective treaty for universities in Austria. The funding period is up to 2 years (depending on the starting date).
TU Wien is committed to increase female employment in leading scientific positions. Female candidates are explicitly encouraged to apply. Preference will be given when equally qualified.
People with special needs are equally encouraged to apply. In case of any questions, please contact the confidant for disabled persons at the university (contact: gerhard.neustaetter@tuwien.ac.at).

Applications should be submitted through the web portal linked below. Selected candidates will be contacted and in-person or remote interviews will be scheduled. Depending on the progress of this process, candidates can start their positions as soon as possible.
